5 Signs That You Need New Shingles

Having your roofing repaired is a lot like applying sunscreen, it is best done before the damage is done. A faulty roof can cause a lot of damage to a home, especially in New England where our weather can be more extreme due to snowstorms. But how do you know when to have your shingles replaced or your roof repaired?

1. Missing Shingles

If your roof is missing shingles it may be time to contact a professional contractor. Check your roof for missing shingles after storms and at the end of each winter. You do not necessarily need to walk on top of your roof to check. Depending on the size and shape of your roof you may be able to check your roof by walking around your home and giving it a visual inspection.

2. Curling Shingles

Missing shingles are a clear and easy way to see that your roof needs work. But shingles can give signs of distress before they go missing. Curling shingles or shingles that are buckling are signs that you need to have replacement shingles installed soon.

3. Age

Generally speaking, most contractors will say that a roof lasts anywhere between twenty and twenty-five years. If you have not had your roof reshingled in over twenty years, it is recommended that you call an exterior contractor to inspect your roof.

4. Broken Shingles in Your Gutter

Check around where your gutter empties and when you clean your gutters check for shingle fragments. If you find a lot of shingle fragments in your gutter, it is time to replace your shingles.

5. Check Your Attic

If sunlight is coming through your roof into the attic, it is likely that the wooden decking in your roof has weakened due to moisture. You can also test this by walking on your roof. If there is a bouncy feel to your roof as you walk around, this is due to your decking becoming weaker. Weakened roof decking can lead to roof collapses and should be dealt with quickly.
